New Drug Spotlight

smbullet.gif (69 bytes)Paxil CR is now available from GlaxoSmithKline. This is an odd new release as Paxil CR is not longer acting than Paxil. They are both given once a day. Rather the new CR drug is supposed to have fewer GI side effects. Paxil CR is enteric coated for controlled release so the drug is released further down in the intestines away from the stomach hence the fewer GI side effects. Paxil CR is available in stronger milligram strengths, but less is absorbed so the higher strength tablet in Paxil CR is not stronger than Paxil tablet in the corresponding strength.

News & Notes

smbullet.gif (69 bytes)There is a lot of talk about whether hormone replacement therapy reduces the risk of heart disease or not. A lot of the talk and confusion is surrounding a new study called HERS (Heart and Estrogen/progestin Replacement Study). This study showed that taking estrogen (Premarin) and medroxyprogesterone (Cycrin, Provera, ect) in combination (Prempro) does not lower the risk of heart disease in women who already have heart disease. The study showed an actual increase in the risk of heart disease during the first year of Prempro therapy for women with pre-existing heart disease. After the first year of using the hormones the risk of heart disease decrease by 40 percent. The early increase in the risk of heart disease is believed to be due to an increase in blood clotting from the intake of estrogen while the decline in the risk after 2 years may be due to lower cholesterol from the estrogen. Please remember that this new finding is only for those with pre-existing heart disease who start the drug combination. This increase risk of heart disease does not apply to those who have already been taking the drugs or those who do not have heart disease. Talk to your doctor about hormone replacement therapy which does benefit many women.
