Is Glucosamine and Chondroitin right for you?
Glucosamine is an amino sugar necessary for the construction of connective tissue and healthy cartilage. It is the critical building block of proteoglycans and other substances that form protective tissues. These proteoglycans are large protein molecules that act like a sponge to hold water giving connective tissues elasticity and cushioning effects which provides a buffering action to help protect against impacts that could otherwise cause damage. Without glucosamine our tendons, ligaments, skin, nails, bones, mucous membranes, and other body tissues cannot be formed. Glucosamine is produced in our bodies naturally by the combination of the substances glucose and glutamine which are put together by the enzyme called glucosamine synthetase. Normally we generate sufficient amounts of glucosamine in our bodies this way to form the various compounds needed to generate connective tissue and healthy cartilage. The rate at which our bodies uses glucosamine though increases during athletic activity, injuries, burns, arthritis and other inflammatory disorders, age associated chronic degeneration, and when bones are broken. In these situations our bodies may not be able to keep up with the demand for glucosamine potentially leading to a decrease in the amount of proteoglycans produced. This decrease in proteoglycan production may lead to a decrease in the amount of protective lubricating substances like the synovial fluids which normally cushion our joints protecting them from damage.
With this knowledge researchers put together studies to determine whether dietary glucosamine would effectively supplement our bodies' glucosamine needs. Many published studies have shown that dietary supplementation of glucosamine would be able to replace what the body cannot adequately make. The studies showed that oral glucosamine was absorbed and lead to the stimulation of healthy new cartilage and other protective molecules. The studies also showed that oral glucosamine carried this benefit without toxicity, contraindications, or side effects.
Chondroitin is a glycosaminoglycan that is concentrated in joint cartilage. Like glucosamine, chondroitin helps produce substances needed for the formation of connective tissue. Unlike glucosamine though chondroitin has the ability to protect existing cartilage from prematurely breaking down by inhibiting enzymes that normally destroy cartilage. So chondrotion encourages cartilage formation while protecting existing cartilage.
Using glucosamine and chondroitin in combination may be synergistic. (1+1=3) Glucosamine can be used by the body to from chondrotion but this process uses a lot of glucosamine leaving little of the substance to form proteoglycans which as discussed above leads to the formation of protective tissues and healthy cartilage. So adding the chondrotion to the glucosamine spares more glucosamine for this more important function while providing protection for existing cartilage from enzymatic degradation.

Mason's Glucosamine/Chondroitin Maximum Strength 1500 Complex. This formula contains 500mg of Glucosamine Sulfate and 400mg of Chondroitin Sulfate along with 10mg of Manganese Sulfate and 66mg of Ascorbate Sodium per capsule. Take only 1 capsule 2-3 times a day. Recent studies show that glucosamine sulfate reduces joint inflammation and increases lubrication easing joint movement and increasing mobility. Research shows that other forms of glucosamine such as glucosamine HCL, N-acetyl glucosamine and others are not as effective as glucosamine sulfate. Research has also shown that the use of vitamins and minerals specifically ascorbate (Vitamin C) and manganese and several others aid in the absorption and/or utilization of Glucosamine. Many formulas don't include these important ingredients. Mason's 1500 Complex is complete including these vitamins and minerals. Mason's Glucosamine & Chondroitin
1500 Complex is the preferred
supplement for persons experiencing wear and tear on their bodies' joint structures.
Glucosamine is essential to building strong joint structures. Together with Chondroitin,
they enable the formation of a spongy shock absorber within cartilage. This decreases the
changes of the cartilage from becoming malnourished, drier, thinner and more fragile.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin 1500 Complex is the formula that has recently been supported in
the news by prominent doctors and those who experience common joint stiffness. Mason's
Glucosamine & Chondroitin sulfates combination formula contains the same ingredients
as stipulated in the best seller book - "The Arthritis Cure" by Dr. Jason
Theodosakis and it is the most used supplement by arthritis sufferers today.
